At Andoversford, we are huge advocates of risky play – but what is it and how does it help? Despite the name, risky play doesn’t mean putting yourself at risk. In fact, it does the opposite! Children who engage in risky play learn to solve problems, develop their physical strength and their emotional resilience. There are a great many benefits to health and well-being – and social skills – and teamwork – and coordination – and mental health – the list goes on!
How can adults help? As adults, we can be cautious and find ourselves saying, ‘Be careful!’ While this is well-intentioned, it often does not support the risky play in the same way that phrases such as, ‘How will you keep your balance,’ or ‘Where does your foot need to be to help you stay stable?’
