Andoversford Primary School: Governors’ Report

13 May 2024 (by Rachel Bradley McKay (Head))

This is the first in a series of reports, where the School’s Governors will report on the extent and nature of a specific element of the School’s curriculum.

This first report, in anticipation of the School’s Sports Day on Friday 24th May, addresses physical education.

The School strives to include, within its curriculum, a programme of high-quality physical education which inspires each pupil, consistent with their individual ability, to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities.

From time to time, Governors monitor what happens in school and discuss progress with the subject leader to ensure that the commitments made in the School’s curriculum are delivered to the expected standards of quality of teaching and pupil safety.

Physical education provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness, so that they lead healthy, active lives.

Physical education is targeted so that pupils become fluent in the fundamentals of movement, through varied and frequent practice.

At least 90 minutes of the weekly timetable is dedicated to physical education instruction. A nationally recognised approach to teaching, which benefits from external experts who assist the school’s teaching staff, deliveries fundamental movement skills lessons. The school use REAL PE programmes to support the delivery of lessons.

In addition to the fundamental movement sessions, the School teaches swimming, gymnastics, dance, rounders, hockey, cricket, rugby and athletics. Often, the school will use expert coaches to deliver sessions and enhance the provision available for pupils. For example, Balance-ability lessons are currently happening in the Early Years through our partners at Move More, while earlier in the year Gloucester Rugby coaches provided lessons in tag rugby across Key Stage 2.

Intra-school competition opportunities are offered when it is safe for pupils to attend.

The whole School take part in TEAM - Ten Extra Active Minutes - every morning, where pupils enjoy collaborative games, dance or yoga activities. The School’s trim trails and large outdoor areas provide space for pupils to move about outdoors. The dedicated forest area is used to encourage pupils to take physical risks, such as climbing trees, in a safe environment.

Governors will be attending the Sports Day and would welcome the opportunity to learn your thoughts about the School’s physical education curriculum.

The School’s curriculum, including a section specific to physical education, is available on the School’s website at: https://www.andoversford.gloucs.sch.uk/our-curriculum/overview
