The future is decided by those who turn up! It is very well-documented that pupils who have good attendance achieve more academically, however they also develop more of the skills required for a successful future. Confidence, social interaction skills, the ability to manage a range of situations, perseverance and commitment should not be underestimated. These skills are vital for everyone. At Andoversford Primary School, we want all of our children to develop into happy and successful individuals. 

Over the last few years, we have all had to adapt to changing messages about school attendance - particularly as more information was gathered about Covid-19 and the crossover between Covid-19 symptoms with some minor illnesses. Luckily, we are now in a more settled position where the advice and guidance has stabilised. 

Children deserve a full education. They should only ever miss school if they are too ill to attend, or if permission has been given, for example for a medical appointment which cannot be made out of school hours. What do we mean by good attendance?

Perfect attendance of 100% is of course wonderful, however, not always realistic to achieve. It is not uncommon for children to pick up some illnesses - especially if a tummy bug is going around! Schools have clear guidance on infectious diseases, including vomiting and diarrhoea, which are in place to help stop the spread even when the child has started to feel better themselves.

An attendance figure over 96% is considered Good attendance. Below that, children miss out on a huge amount in the classroom - as well as the softer skills - which can make them lose confidence and may mean they fall behind their peers. If your child has an attendance figure of 90%, they have missed 20 days of school in a year. This figure causes concern and is considered persistent absence.
